AVONDALE, LA (WVUE) – A westbank shipyard says goodbye to its final war ship. The USS Somerset set sail from Avondale around 8am Monday.
The war ship is the third in a series of vessels named for the September 11th terrorist attacks. Steel from Flight 93 which crashed in Somerset, Pennsylvania is incorporated in the ship’s structure.
It’s now headed toward Philadelphia for a commissioning ceremony scheduled for March 1st.
Monday’s departure marks a new era for Avondale Industries. The shipyard will no longer build ships but it will remain open to manufacture equipment for the oil and gas industries.
